Text Box: Mabel's Bonnets - Charlotte c. 1831
A "bavolet" was a frill at the back of the bonnet, like a curtain, which came into fashion about 1828 and lasted until the 1860's.  The curves of the bonnet brim increased in size so thta they had to be wired.  The crown was high and almost perpendicular, and decorations were placed on the underside of the brim.  The bonnet was lined and had a profusion of ribbon bows, flowers, and feathers.  "Mentonnieres" or "chin stays" were attached to these bonnets to tie under the chin.
Height: 10 inches
Cost: $250.00
