Text Box: Mabel's Bonnets - Lillie c. 1908
Hats had large wide crowns which were profusely ornamented with flowers.  Trimmings were extremely profuse, consisting of, flowers, lace, tulle, and feathers.  Large hats had to be secured with long hatpins which often had ornamented heads of jewels in the shape of flowers and other objects and designs.  As these long hatpins were placed through the hat and protruded at the other end, the sharp points were often protected with butts which were paced over the tips.
Large hats known as "Merry Widow" hats were popularized by Lily Elsie, who wore them embellished with feathers and flowers in the first London production of Franz Lehar's operetta of that name in 1908.  By about 1910 hat diameters reached up to 180 cm. while skirt hems were about 120 cm.
